Montreal, Canada

Audra and I decided to take a road trip to Montreal, Canada

One benefit of driving... Maple Habanero Wings in Burlington, VT

We made it across the border without issue.  Canada, in my experience, has been the hardest country to get in and out of.  Which is one reason I rarely attempt a crossing.

Montreal, is a beautiful city, founded by a group of French people in the 1600's.  My question is, what was going on in France in the 1600's- that the idea of living in a vast frozen tundra sounded more appealing?

We had a great time checking out the sights and stayed in a great hotel, Auberge Bonaparte in Old Town.

Old town Montreal is set up with lots of little artsy shops and restaurants.  Unfortunately, many of the areas restaurants were closed.

We were happy to duck in to warm up with a great meal or a drink when we had a chance.  Temperatures averaged around -22(c)rap it's cold or -8(f)uck it's freezing and got even colder!

We were given a bowl of about 6 pickles and another of bacon bits prior to one of our meals.  Ok why not? Although wasn't sure what to do with bacon bits.  Maybe they just figure everything is better with bacon.  And I can't really argue with them on that.

I do enjoy seeing places in the winter.  The snow adds an interesting perspective.

Think we are the only ones crazy enough to be out in Montreal this time of year.

We figured out the Metro system.  Fortunately relatively easy to do and convenient for checking out other areas and museums

The Museum of Science was walking distance from our hotel and the first one we saw.  It was organized well with some interesting exhibits and interactive activities.

The museum of science is right on the port. Although, if it wasn't for boat and the barely visible docks I probably wouldn't have noticed : )

Polar Plunge?
We also went to the Museum of Fine Arts and checked out the art work.  I didn't get any photos inside the museum, but here are some sculptures from outside
I'm not sure about this one with the giant hole in the chest and hands coming out of the face.
We were able to hop on the metro close to the MFA and head over to the Bio-dome.  Was almost a shock to the system to be in some of the warmer climates they have in the dome
 outside near the Bio dome
 just chillaxin
The city also has some spectacular churches.  We stayed around the corner from the Notre Dame Basillica.  Beautiful church which offers a light show at night that educates about the history of Montreal and the church itself.
and yes the show took place inside the church and out of the cold.

It's amazing how ornate and intricate the detailing inside some churches are.  Amazing the time and effort that went into them.  Another beautiful church we saw was Saint Patrick Basilica
Audra's phone takes some great shots.

Although we were back and cozied up in our hotel relatively early we did get out and explore the sights at night too.

Statue across from the Notre Dame depicting the various settlers of Montreal

I thought this neat.

We decided to go for a movie one night.  Weren't sure if the movies would play in French or English (French is the main language) so opted for Captain Philips.  1.  It looked interesting and 2.  Figured it would be one of the easier movies to follow if we couldn't understand the dialogue.

The lobby outside the movie theater was set up as a hockey rink

Made a few stops on our drive back.  Lunch in Montpelier, sampled  Cabot cheese, and took advantage of some photo ops.

Felt good to get out of Boston and explore a new area
